Tech Companies Create Lawsuit Prevention Organization

July 1st, 2008 · No Comments

An organization called the Allied Security Trust has been formed between more than ten of the tech industry giants. Some of the names in the group include Cisco Systems, Google, Ericsson, Verizon Communications, Hewlett-Packard and six others who did not want to release their names. The group is located in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and has plans buy patents in order to reduce infringement costs and other related lawsuits.

Many of these big companies have been lobbying Congress for patent-law changes. All of the measures have been taken in an attempt to reduce costs and damages sustained in lawsuits. The maker of BlackBerry, Research In Motion, paid over 600 million dollars for infringement costs. The plaintiff threatened to shut down the BlackBerry e-mail service for all of the United States.

In making this organization, the companies are trying to avoid more damaging lawsuits. According to Verizon spokesman, some companies “are not essentially in the business of actually producing anything or using the patents.”
