Free Patent Searching From Home

June 10th, 2008 · No Comments

Before the advent of the internet, searching for a patent was incredibly difficult and expensive.  If one wanted to get his idea patented, he would have had to hire a lawyer (with a price upwards of $500) who would go through the library of files to find out whether or not your idea had or hadn’t been already thought of.

Nowadays, the story is much different.  You are now able to simply go to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Website and search their database.  The database dates back to 1971.  If you need to search beyond this date, it is possible to visit a State Patent and Trademark Depository Library and use their resources.  However, the services provided there are not free.  Be sure to check and see what to cost is before you go.

If you’ve got a novel idea for a new product or process, the first step is finding out whether or not the idea has already been patented.  Once you’ve done that, consult legal counsel for details about the patenting process and also to determine whether or not your idea is patentable.  The patent specialists at the Williams Kherkher law firm are more than willing to entertain your questions, comments, and concerns.  Call 866.950.9000 for more information.
